Bulk Carrier Aids in Rescue of Distressed Migrants Near Gibraltar
On the morning of November 1, 2022, the European agency Frontex alerted maritime authorities of a distressed vessel located approximately ten nautical miles southeast of Gibraltar. In response, Spain's Salvamento Marítimo mobilized the SAR vessel 'Salvamar Denebola' and alerted nearby ships to assist. Among them was the bulk carrier 'Aggelos B', which was making its way from Morehead City to Port Said. The 'Aggelos B' played a critical role by providing escort to the small kayak carrying two adult male migrants of North African descent until the rescue boat arrived at 1:30 p.m. The 'Salvamar Denebola' successfully retrieved the individuals from peril and transported them to the Port of Algeciras, reaching the harbor around 2:30 p.m. Following this humanitarian effort, the 'Aggelos B' resumed its journey to Egypt.
