SBI Jaguar Runs Aground in Wester Scheldt: A Maritime Incident Overview
In the early hours of March 28, 2018, the bulk carrier 'SBI Jaguar', en route from Antwerp to Mobile, USA, ran aground on a sandbank at Perkpolder along the Wester Scheldt at approximately 1:35 a.m. This incident followed a previous encounter with engine trouble near Hans Weert, prompting the ship's master to attempt to slow the vessel by dropping anchor. However, with a draft of 10.9 meters, the ship gradually drifted toward shallower waters on the Zeeland-side. Fortunately, Rijkswaterstaat confirmed that there was no immediate danger or disruption to other vessels in the area. The expectation was set for the 'SBI Jaguar' to be refloated between noon and 1 p.m. as the tide began to rise. Tugs 'Multratug 20' (IMO: 9572006) and 'Union Emerald' (IMO: 9314296) were placed on standby nearby. In addition, Rijkswaterstaat dispatched patrol boats 'RWS 78' and 'P 86' for surveying the situation. As the morning progressed, other tugs, including 'Multratug 4', 'Multratug 6', 'Multratug 7', 'Union Hawk', and 'Union 6', were also summoned to assist. Ultimately, around 1:30 p.m., the bulk carrier was successfully refloated and towed at a gentle speed of 2 knots to deeper waters. By 4:30 p.m., 'SBI Jaguar' was securely moored at Everingen Anchorage, with 'Union Emerald' and 'Multratug 6' continuing their assistance while other tugs returned to their respective berths. Following a safety inspection by the launch 'VLB 6' (MMSI: 244650887), the vessel departed the anchorage and proceeded to Rotterdam. The ship successfully berthed at Shell Europoort Terminal at 2:30 p.m., resuming its journey to Mobile, with an estimated arrival date of April 16, 2018.
