Manslaughter Charges Filed Against Captain and First Officer of Al Safat Following Tragic Red Sea Collision
In a significant legal development, Egypt's public prosecutor has officially charged the captain and first officer of the vessel "Al Safat" with manslaughter. This charge comes in the wake of a tragic maritime incident that occurred on December 20, when a collision in the Red Sea resulted in the loss of 25 lives, all of whom were Egyptian fishermen. The two defendants have been in custody since the accident, and the prosecutor has also mandated the seizure of the vessel, which was last reported anchored at Safaga port. Meanwhile, search efforts continue for three crew members aboard the "Badr Islam," who remain unaccounted for.
Collision in Gulf of Suez: Al Safat Linked to Badr Islam Tragedy
In a tragic incident on December 14, 2014, early morning hours, unverified sources have identified the vessel "Al Safat" as the ship responsible for the fatal collision with the Egyptian fishing boat "Badr Islam". This accident occurred in the Gulf of Suez, between Ras Ghareb and Tor Sinai port, approximately 50 kilometers from Hurghada. At the time of the incident, the fishing vessel was carrying between 40 to 45 crew members. Rescue operations led to the recovery of 13 deceased individuals, while another 13 crew members were saved. Sadly, several others remained unaccounted for following the incident. Eyewitness reports suggest that the crash transpired at dawn, immediately after the Kuwaiti container ship had navigated through the Suez Canal and was en route southward. According to preliminary investigations, it appears that the fishing vessel capsized after being struck by "Al Safat," which was reportedly on its correct course and speed. The cargo shipβs captain attempted a hard turn to port to avoid a collision; however, the fishing boat unexpectedly crossed its path, resulting in the unfortunate incident. After the collision, the captain of "Al Safat" was alerted by the officer on duty about the crash. He promptly contacted VTS Ras Ghareb to report the incident, expressing his suspicion that they had struck a boat. Since no distress call was made, the cargo vessel was permitted to proceed to Safaga Port, where it was detained for further investigation upon arrival, and the crew is currently under questioning by legal authorities. The death toll from this maritime tragedy has now risen to 17, following the retrieval of four additional bodies from the submerged vessel. Reports indicate that the small fishing craft had a total of 44 individuals on board during the collision.
