On March 29, 2020, in a remarkable display of maritime heroism, the crew of the tanker 'Johann Schulte' played a pivotal role in rescuing three crew members who had fled a burning vessel situated 70 miles off the coast of Cabo de Gata. The dramatic sequence of events began around 2:30 p.m. when the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) in Almería was alerted by the 'Johann Schulte' regarding the distress call from a nearby ship engulfed in flames. In response, the MRCC dispatched the Helimer 222 helicopter to the scene. Shortly after, a Customs Surveillance aircraft also reported sighting the troubled ship, escalating the urgency in the area. An Algerian vessel nearby was subsequently requested to offer assistance. Amidst the turmoil, the 'Johann Schulte' successfully rescued the three stranded crew members from a life raft. Following the rescue, the helicopter transported them to safety. Upon arrival at Almería airport, medical personnel were on standby to provide immediate care, ensuring the crew received the assistance they needed after their harrowing ordeal.
