What Crew Members Say About Alam-Sayang

On January 24, 2019, the bulk carrier 'Alam Sayang' experienced a critical malfunction while situated approximately 190 nautical miles off the scenic coast of Haida Gwaii. The situation prompted the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre in Victoria to deploy the emergency offshore vessel 'Atlantic Eagle' to assess the scenario. Fortunately, the Canadian Coast Guard soon confirmed that the crew aboard the 'Alam Sayang' was safe and unharmed, allowing for the case to transition to the Coast Guard’s Environmental Response team. Despite efforts by the crew to rectify the ship's issues, their attempts did not yield successful results. Consequently, they engaged a commercial tug to assist with towing operations back to shore. On January 26, as a precautionary step, the emergency offshore tow vessel 'Atlantic Raven' was assigned to monitor the situation in an environmental response capacity until the contracted tug arrived on site and commenced the towing process. Throughout the incident, the Canadian Coast Guard, along with Transport Canada, maintained close communication with the 'Alam Sayang' via the Prince Rupert Marine Communication and Traffic Services Center. Ultimately, the bulk carrier made its way to Vancouver, reaching its destination on January 31. Notably, the entire operation concluded without any reported pollution, ensuring the safety of both the crew and the marine environment.
