Coast Guard Conducts Medical Evacuation in Cold Bay for Injured Crew Member
On March 31, 2014, a crew from the Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak utilized an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter to perform a crucial medical evacuation of an injured mariner from the fishing vessel "Alaska Mariner." The incident unfolded in the early morning hours when the 17th District command center watchstanders received an alarm regarding the crew member's injury. The "Alaska Mariner" was situated 125 miles southeast of Cold Bay and immediately began its journey towards King Cove. Upon arrival in King Cove, the vessel's crew transferred the injured 58-year-old man into a small boat, which proceeded to the shore where the Jayhawk team was stationed. After a prompt assessment, the Jayhawk crew efficiently transported the injured man, who had sustained an eye injury, to awaiting commercial medevac services in Cold Bay, ensuring he received the necessary medical attention.
