This weekend, maritime enthusiasts will witness a significant event as the first saltwater vessel of the 2016 shipping season arrives in the Twin Ports. The Albanyborg, a prominent ship flying the Dutch flag, is expected to dock in Duluth around 5 p.m. on Sunday, April 3. This 472-foot vessel has made waves by being the inaugural foreign-flag ship to enter the Great Lakes St. Lawrence Seaway system since its opening on March 23. Once it arrives, the Albanyborg will spend the night at the Clure Public Marine Terminal. On Monday, the ship will remain at the Port Terminal while work begins to erect bulkheads in its cargo hold, preparing it for an upcoming load of grain. Following that, it will set sail toward the CHS Terminal situated on the Superior side of the harbor, where it is scheduled to load 10,000 tons of spring wheat bound for Italy. In a fun twist, Visit Duluth organized a contest inviting locals to predict the arrival date of this first saltwater vessel. Over 2,100 participants joined in, and the winner of this exciting contest will be announced on Monday, adding to the festive maritime atmosphere surrounding this significant event.
