Midshipman Cody Kessler, a dedicated junior forward from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, has been honored as the Safety Award recipient for March by the heroic crew of the 'Alliance Norfolk'. Kessler was participating in the academy's immersive Year at Sea program when he showcased exceptional bravery and skill during a critical incident. On March 12, he dedicated 26 hours to combat a fire and subsequent re-flash incident on cargo deck No. 5. Chief Engineer Thomas McKenzie commended Kessler's remarkable contributions, stating, 'He is an extremely valuable ship asset, and we are proud of the standard that he has set for himself and others.' Throughout the emergency, Kessler actively assisted the ship's electrician in isolating leaking drainage piping, rigged damage control pumping equipment, and ensured the firefighters and crew stayed hydrated by delivering drinking water. His actions reflect the high ideals of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and underscore the importance of preparedness and teamwork in maritime safety.
