On March 18, 2026, at 8:40 a.m., a heartbreaking maritime incident unfolded in the Dana 1 area of Midia Port when the tugboat 'Astana' (IMO: 9414204) capsized while attempting to assist the tanker 'Amades'. As the tug tried to secure the vessel at the Monbuoy terminal, located approximately eight kilometers from Midia Port, it suffered an engine failure and overturned to starboard before sinking stern first. Emergency response teams sprang into action, including three Saj B crews, a mobile intensive care team, and a helicopter crew, complemented by a SMURD B crew and fire engine responders. To aid in the search and rescue efforts, two boats from ARVOM deployed four divers, while another ARVOM vessel carried ten divers, alongside military personnel from the ISU and additional utility divers. Midia Marine Terminal divers also contributed to the response efforts. Tragically, one survivor was retrieved from the water by the crew of the tug 'București', but despite immediate resuscitation attempts at the port, the individual was pronounced deceased. Reports indicate that four others aboard the 'Astana' may also have lost their lives, prompting ongoing search and rescue operations. The incident occurred during routine assistance for the tanker at the Midia Marine Terminal, with authorities confirming that the unloading operations for the tanker have been halted to prevent further risks. A thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the capsizing is underway, led by the Prosecutor's Office, while the ISU 'Dobrogea' Constanța and ARSVOM maintain direct communication with the vessel’s owning company.
