Pirate Attack on New York Star: Successful Defense by Crew
On January 28, 2011, at 06:00 a.m., the tanker 'New York Star' (IMO: 9330355) became the target of a pirate assault while sailing 523 nautical miles northwest of Kavaratti Island at coordinates 11°27'0"N and 063°48'0"E. The vessel, carrying 55,000 tons of naphtha on its route from Rabigh to Singapore, was boarded by a group of four pirates. In a swift response, the crew of 27 took refuge in a citadel, ensuring their safety. The situation escalated as the crew awaited assistance. Despite attempts by the pirates to breach the citadel, their efforts were thwarted. Naval authorities responded quickly, dispatching a European warship to the area. Early on January 29, the warship deployed a boarding team that conducted a thorough search of the tanker, ultimately finding no indications of the pirates and safely releasing the crew. Remarkably, all crew members remained unharmed during this harrowing incident, and the vessel sustained minimal damage. The pirates, presumably unable to infiltrate the citadel, managed to escape and regroup with their mother ship, which consisted of two skiffs and a dhow. This group was later tracked to coordinates 11°19'0"N, 063°37'0"E, roughly 533 nautical miles northwest of Kavaratti Island on a bearing of 275.7 degrees.
