American Courage Aground Off Fairport Harbor: Successful Recovery Operation
On May 22, 2022, at approximately 1:10 p.m. UTC, the cargo vessel 'American Courage' found itself aground near Fairport Harbor, Ohio, at coordinates 41° 47.04' N, 081° 17.25' W. The ship, which had departed from Marblehead, was on a mission to deliver limestone to the Osborne Concrete and Stone facility in Fairport Harbor when it ran into trouble at the western breakwater. Initial attempts to dislodge the vessel by two tugboats in the evening proved unsuccessful. In response to the situation, the 'Manitowoc,' another nearby vessel, was brought in on May 23 to assist with lightering operations, transferring some of the cargo to facilitate the 'American Courage's' release. The U.S. Coast Guard, alongside the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, conducted a thorough inspection of the freighter's hull, confirming that no damage had occurred and no injuries were reported during the incident. A successful recovery was accomplished on May 24, just after 4 a.m., allowing the 'American Courage' to resume its journey into Fairport Harbor under its own power.
