Chemical Tanker Amonith Experiences Engine Failure in Pas de Calais
On July 11, 2016, the chemical tanker Amonith encountered a significant engine failure while navigating off Boulogne-sur-Mer. The vessel was transporting 4,000 tons of toluene, a hazardous substance categorized as IMO3, and was situated 35 nautical miles within the Traffic Separation Scheme of Pas de Calais at the time of the incident. The emergency was promptly reported to CROSS Gris-Nez, which facilitated the request for at-sea repairs. However, after ongoing attempts to resolve the issue through repairs overnight proved unsuccessful, the maritime prefecture of the Channel and the North Sea took preventive measures. They dispatched the tug Abeille Languedoc, stationed in Boulogne-sur-Mer, to assist the stranded tanker. Meanwhile, Amonith's owner was advised to consider a towing option. Following this, a towing contract was successfully signed with Les Abeille. The towing convoy reached the vicinity of Dunkirk on July 12 at 3 PM, where the Amonith was anchored, awaiting the arrival of a specialized repair team arranged by the shipowner.
