Authorities have initiated an inquiry into the tragic deaths of Ahmet Mohamed Hassan Youssef, a 26-year-old Egyptian crew member, and 23-year-old Syrian national Hosin Alothman, which occurred on May 13, 2020. The sailors were working aboard the 'Anakin', which has been docked at the port of Famagusta. Following the incident, the ship's captain, Hassan Arnaout, was apprehended and subsequently presented before the Famagusta Accident Court on charges related to negligence that led to the fatalities of the two crew members. In a precautionary measure, the court has ordered that the captain undergo a medical assessment. The unfortunate incident transpired when both crew members suffered electric shocks while performing maintenance on a 380 kW electrical cable that powered the pressurized water engine. According to police reports, the cable, which was damaged, fell onto the shaft of the water motor propeller, causing a short circuit. During this incident, while Alothman was engaged in cleaning activities, the power surged to the pressure washer, leading to his electrocution. In an attempt to rescue him, Youssef was also tragically injured, and both men succumbed to their injuries in the hospital. Captain Arnaout had been in command of the vessel since its departure from Lebanon to Spain approximately eight months prior, with a total of 15 crew members on board. The 'Anakin' has been anchored in Famagusta since October 24, 2019, due to prior engine failures, during which time five crew members, including an engineer, have departed.
