Freighter 'Anastasia' Strands on Euboea's Rocky Shores

Jul 04, 2016 09:31

On July 2, 2016, at precisely 11:50 p.m., the freighter 'Anastasia' met an unfortunate fate as it ran aground on the rocky shallows off the eastern coast of Stroggili Island, near the eastern tip of Euboea. The vessel became stuck a mere two meters from the shoreline after departing from Psachna port earlier that day at 7:30 a.m., en route to Thessaloniki carrying no cargo. The grounding resulted in damage to the hull, prompting immediate safety concerns for the crew, who fortunately remained unharmed during the incident. Given the uncertainty surrounding the extent of the hull damage, salvage operations were postponed until divers from the Greek Coastguard conducted a thorough inspection. In response to the incident, the Port Authority of Edipsos activated its local pollution response plan to address any potential environmental hazards. It wasn't until the afternoon of July 3 that the freighter was successfully pulled free from the rocks with the assistance of the tug 'Achilles' and two Coastguard boats. Throughout the preliminary investigation, the 56-year-old captain of the 'Anastasia' was taken into custody but was later released by prosecutors, albeit with a temporary restriction from departing the vessel.
