On January 7, 2017, during the afternoon hours, the tugboat "Anna-T" successfully took the Coast Guard Cutter "Spar" in tow approximately 230 miles southeast of Kodiak. Arriving to provide support for the convoy was the Coast Guard Cutter "Hickory," a 225-foot seagoing buoytender that is home-ported in Homer. Earlier that day, the tugboat "Chahunta" was preparing to tow the fishing vessel "Lady Gudny" after it had succumbed to fuel filter issues at sea which left the vessel adrift since midnight on January 6. In response, the "Spar" was dispatched to assist. However, as the tug prepared to take the "Lady Gudny" in tow, the towline unexpectedly detached, causing entanglement with the "Spar"'s propellers and resulting in its disability. Fortunately, the four individuals aboard the "Lady Gudny" were safely airlifted by an Air Station Kodiak MH-60T aircrew and transported to Kodiak without any medical issues. The Coast Guard Cutters "Douglas Munro" and "Hickory" were already on the scene, while the Coast Guard Cutter "Alex Haley" was redirected to offer help to the "Spar"'s crew. Additionally, the Coast Guard Cutters "Sycamore" and "Maple" stood by to assist if the situation escalated. The weather during the operation reported rough conditions with 10 to 12-foot seas and winds ranging from 17 to 20 mph.
