On March 24, 2016, authorities from the Bremerhaven water police initiated an investigation into the vessel MV Annaba, following suspected breaches of environmental regulations. During a routine inspection, it was discovered that the ship lacked necessary certificates for transitioning to low sulfur fuel, and the paperwork concerning the treatment of oily bilge water was found to be incomplete. The Ukrainian captain, 44, along with the 62-year-old chief engineer, faced immediate safety fines totaling €2,700. Further scrutiny revealed that they were suspected of discharging 20 cubic meters of oily bilge water into the sea off the coast of Sweden days prior. In collaboration with Swedish law enforcement and the local prosecutor, the chief engineer and a 33-year-old Indian second engineer faced additional penalties, culminating in a total fine of €40,000. Currently, the MV Annaba remains docked at the Bremerhaven fishing port as it undergoes necessary repairs.
