On the morning of November 14, 2011, the tanker 'Elbtank Italy', on its journey from Rotterdam to St. Petersburg, encountered a severe rudder failure while navigating the Kiel Canal. During its eastbound passage, the vessel lost control and collided with the embankment at Fischerhütte passing point. This unfortunate incident resulted in the destruction of seven pilings along a stretch of 180 meters, with three of the pilings sinking completely and the remaining four sustaining significant damage. The latter now protrude at an angle into the navigable channel, rendering the southern side of the canal unsuitable for mooring operations at this time.
