Shipping activities at the port of Virginia remain on track and are advancing as planned. Containers Dislodged from APL Antwerp at Norfolk International Terminal
On July 29, 2018, an incident occurred at the Norfolk International Terminal (NIT) in Norfolk, Virginia, when multiple containers fell from the 'APL Antwerp' during offloading operations. The event was flagged at 3:45 p.m. by the Coast Guard Cutter 'Razorbill,' which reported seeing the loose containers while navigating in the area. According to the Virginia Port Authority, a total of eight containers were displaced from the vessel. In response to the situation, Coast Guard Sector Hampton Roads deployed a 45-foot Response Boat-Medium crew from Coast Guard Station Portsmouth and redirected the Razorbill to assist in recovery efforts. Out of the containers lost, three sank, while the remaining five were successfully retrieved and returned to NIT. Collaborative recovery operations were carried out in conjunction with the Virginia Port Authority Maritime Incident Response Team. A marine safety information broadcast was announced on VHF-FM radio channel 16 to alert nearby mariners of the floating hazards.
