Tanker Aqualoyalty Grounds on Shoal Near Horn Island Buoy
On April 21, 2019, at precisely 11:52 a.m., the tanker Aqualoyalty encountered difficulties as it ran aground on a shoal at the Number 12 Horn Island buoy in the Gulf of Mexico, positioned strategically between Horn and Petit Bois Islands. The vessel, which was transporting an impressive load of 21 million gallons of Colombian crude oil, found itself in a precarious situation mere moments before its scheduled arrival at the port of Pascagoula. Its coordinates were listed as 30° 12' 08" N and 88° 30' 54" W, making it closest to Petit Bois Island at that time. Fortunately, there were no immediate signs of pollution following the incident. Environmental response teams and investigators mobilized to assess the situation, monitoring the tanker closely for any signs of potential leaks. The following day, April 22, a fleet of tugboats, including Signet Challenger, Signet Reliance, Signet Valiant, Signet Victory, and Signet Vigilant, successfully towed the Aqualoyalty to safety. The tanker was then securely berthed at the Chevron Pascagoula Refinery complex at 7:30 p.m., alleviating concerns regarding environmental impact and ensuring the integrity of its cargo.
