Massive Cocaine Bust on Tanker Aquatravesia: 227 kg Seized and Crew Member Arrested

May 23, 2026 08:17

In a significant operation orchestrated by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security alongside the U.S. Coast Guard and Immigration and Customs Enforcement, authorities seized 227 kilograms of cocaine from the tanker Aquatravesia. The seizure led to the arrest of a Filipino crew member, identified as 43-year-old Ceasar Tubay Gelacio. The illicit drugs were originally discovered by the ship's crew, who found them stashed away in the vessel's garbage room, intended for delivery to a Mexican drug cartel. The Aquatravesia, which had set sail from Ecuador on May 8, 2026, was navigating northward when the crew stumbled upon the suspicious packages. Upon discovering the narcotics, the captain promptly took custody of the packages and alerted U.S. authorities. During subsequent interviews, Gelacio admitted to smuggling the drugs. The cartel had orchestrated a plan to rendezvous with a small vessel on the open sea, approximately 80 nautical miles from the coast. Reports indicated that cartel operatives would be armed, intending to seize the narcotics during this exchange, prearranged for the evening of May 14 or the morning of May 15. Furthemore, they issued a warning that failing to comply with the planned transfer would result in pursuit of the ship within Mexican waters. Amid concerns that the Aquatravesia was receiving radio communications from cartel members attempting to make contact, U.S. law enforcement officials directed the tanker to dock at the Port of Los Angeles. Upon arrival at a designated anchorage point on May 21, U.S. agents boarded the vessel. Utilizing a detection canine, they confirmed the presence of the narcotics. Ultimately, authorities confiscated 226 kilograms of cocaine, estimated to have a street value of around $6.4 million. As a result, Gelacio was arrested and is now facing serious charges of importing a controlled substance. If convicted, he could be sentenced to a minimum of 10 years or face life imprisonment in federal custody.
