Investigation Initiated on Sunken Tug 'Simson' by Research Vessel 'Aranda'

Sep 06, 2022 12:30

The research vessel 'Aranda' has commenced a detailed survey of the underwater area near the southeastern part of Utö Island in Finland. This investigation focuses on the tug 'Simson', which tragically sank in 1978, and aims to assess the potential for an oil removal operation from the vessel. Coordinated by the Finnish Environment Institute, this operation addresses concerns regarding the sunken ship sitting near the environmentally sensitive Archipelago National Park. Originally constructed in 1915 and operational until the late 1970s, the 'Simson' underwent a significant overhaul in 1971. However, it sank in 1978 and is believed to still contain approximately 25,000 litres of light fuel oil. The current assessment's primary objective is to create a 3D model of the wreckage, facilitating further operations and determining methods for safely draining the oil. Lying at a depth of around 60 metres, the wreck is partially submerged in mud, presenting several challenges for the survey team. Utilizing sophisticated hydroacoustic equipment and imaging from a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV), the research will yield crucial data for managing potential environmental risks. Given its proximity to a nature reserve, there is an urgent need for precaution. Should any oil leakage occur, it poses a significant threat to the Finnish coastline and the Archipelago National Park, especially under typical wind conditions that could direct oil toward these vulnerable areas. Plans for an oil spill response will be evaluated and, if deemed necessary, will be tendered for execution during 2023. This investigation is part of a broader initiative launched by Finland's Ministry of the Environment aimed at enhancing water protection between 2019 and 2023. To date, four wrecks have been rehabilitated under this program: the dredger Veli near Hanko, the dry cargo vessels Hanna-Marjut and Fortuna at Kihti Gulf, and the motor vessel Beatris in the Iniö area. The project is led by SYKE, in cooperation with the Finnish Navy and the Finnish Border Guard. Finnish Research Vessel 'Aranda' Intercepted by Russian Military in Baltic Sea

Oct 12, 2014 10:40

The Finnish Environment Institute reported on October 11, 2014, that the research vessel 'Aranda' faced two significant interceptions by Russian military vessels while operating in international waters of the Baltic Sea. The initial encounter occurred on August 2, 2014, when a Russian warship commanded the 'Aranda' to adjust its course eastward off the coast of Gotland, Sweden, via radio. While the vessel complied with the first instruction, it disregarded a subsequent request to change course again, during which time crew members observed a nearby submarine. The situation escalated in September when both a Russian helicopter and military ship approached the research vessel closely, prompting concerns among the onboard Swedish researchers and crew about their safety. Despite these interactions, the 'Aranda' maintained its course and continued its vital marine research, undeterred. In light of these events, Finland’s foreign ministry expressed apprehension over the preliminary reports and confirmed that the Finnish Defence Forces are currently investigating these incidents.

ARANDA Research Vessel Sets Sail to Assess Radiation in the Baltic Sea

Aug 01, 2011 10:33

On Saturday, the renowned Finnish maritime research ship ARANDA embarked on an important mission to investigate the environmental conditions of the eastern Gulf of Finland. The vessel will meticulously evaluate radiation levels, oxygen content, and the presence of marine life on the seafloor across both Finnish and Russian waters. In addition, the research team will monitor for harmful algae toxins and nutrient levels. Departing from the port of Kotka, ARANDA is not only set to collect critical data but will also make a stop in St. Petersburg for a public exhibition showcasing its scientific efforts. The Baltic Sea, known as the most radioactive sea globally, harbors significant radiation primarily absorbed into its sediment. This situation stems largely from the aftermath of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster that unfolded 25 years ago, leading to heightened concerns regarding marine and ecological health in the area.
