Grain Exports Boosted as Two Vessels Depart Chornomorsk

Aug 08, 2022 11:00

In a significant development for Ukrainian grain exports, two vessels have recently departed from Black Sea ports, continuing the trend of returning maritime activity under the agreement between Ukraine and Russia to facilitate sea shipments. The cargo ship 'Sacura' (IMO: 9497000) embarked from the port of Yuzhne on August 8, 2022, at 5:15 AM, carrying approximately 11,000 tons of soybeans destined for Ravenna, with an estimated time of arrival on August 16. In another operation, the vessel 'Arizona' set sail from Chornomorsk on August 7 at 7:30 AM, transporting a substantial load of 48,458 tons of corn to Iskenderun. These departures mark a positive step toward rejuvenating Ukraine's vital grain export industry amid ongoing regional tensions.

Bulk Carrier Arizona Grounded Due to Ice-Induced Draft Changes

Feb 21, 2012 12:14

On February 20, 2012, at approximately 1800 Moscow time, the bulk carrier Arizona encountered a rare maritime incident as it ran aground while departing from the port of St. Petersburg. The vessel, fully loaded with steel bound for Houston, faced an unusual predicament during its loading process. With the hatches open, the contrasting temperatures between the water and the cargo holds led to the accumulation of ice on the hull, significantly increasing the draft of the ship. As a result, the navigable channel became too shallow to accommodate this altered draft. Despite the efforts of four tugboats attempting to refloat the stranded vessel, they were only able to shift it approximately 150 meters along the channel, falling short of freeing it entirely. In response to the situation, divers were called in to inspect the vessel on February 21, initiating a salvage assessment to develop an effective recovery plan. This incident serves as a reminder of the unpredictable challenges faced in maritime operations during cold weather conditions, particularly when ice formation can dramatically affect vessel navigation and safety.
