Arklow Brave Discovers Drifting Crab Boat, Skipper Missing

Aug 27, 2015 09:48

On August 25, 2015, at 6:05 PM, the cargo vessel "Arklow Brave" played a crucial role in the search for a missing crab boat that was found drifting nearly 20 kilometers southwest of the Glénan archipelago. This area was the last known location of the fishing vessel "Ar Morvran" which had been reported missing. Upon approach, the crew of the "Arklow Brave" confirmed the identity of the crab boat but were alarmingly unable to find anyone aboard. Earlier in the day, around 2:05 PM, the CROSS Etel was alerted by a concerned witness regarding the crab boat and its missing skipper. After communicating with the vessel owner's family and various shoreline witnesses as well as those at sea, it was confirmed that the 9-meter fishing boat had departed from Port-La-Forêt at 9:35 AM with a single individual on board. Despite efforts to contact the fisherman via radio, no response was received. In light of the situation, CROSS Etel initiated Mayday Relay broadcasts, urging all vessels in the vicinity to keep a vigilant lookout. The search and rescue operation engaged multiple resources including the "SNS 297" from the Fouesnant lifeboat station, a Navy Lynx helicopter, two fishing vessels from Port-La-Forêt, the "SNS 140" from the Loctudy lifeboat station, and a Dragon 29 helicopter from civil security. Following the discovery made by "Arklow Brave", the Dragon 29 helicopter arrived at 6:27 PM, coinciding with adverse sea conditions experienced during the sinking of the "Morvan Ar". Although the helicopter crew made attempts to locate the missing fisherman, their efforts were unfortunately unsuccessful. Shortly thereafter, they vacated the area, allowing the Navy’s Cayman 33E helicopter to resume the search at 7:14 PM. After hours of searching with no new leads, at 10:05 PM, the search operation was officially suspended following discussions with the Director of CROSS Etel.
