Arklow Breeze Heroes: Fishing Crew Rescued from Capsized Vessel in English Channel

Nov 09, 2018 23:30

On November 7, 2018, the merchant ship 'Arklow Breeze' was sailing from Ijmuiden to Aviles when it sprang into action to rescue two fishermen from the Belgian fishing vessel 'Morgenster', which had capsized off the coast of Eastbourne, 14 miles southeast in the English Channel. The emergency unfolded around 4 p.m. when HM Coastguard received a distress call from a nearby merchant ship, reporting sight of the capsized fishing boat with two crew members clinging to the hull while two others were struggling in the water. An emergency alert was also triggered from the fishing vessel’s EPIRB, prompting an immediate response. The HM Coastguard Lydd search and rescue helicopter was dispatched along with the RNLI All Weather Lifeboats from Eastbourne and Newhaven. A Mayday relay was broadcasted, urging all vessels in the vicinity to assist. Numerous nearby vessels heeded the call and headed to the rescue site. After a tense 45 minutes, 'Arklow Breeze' successfully retrieved the two fishermen from the frigid waters while the helicopter attended to their colleagues clinging to the hull. Fortunately, while they were cold and wet, the rescued fishermen were reported to be safe and unharmed. Drunken Master Causes Collision with Arklow Breeze in Brunsbüttel

Jun 03, 2016 17:06

On June 2, 2016, an unfortunate incident occurred at approximately 5 p.m. when the cargo vessel 'Rix Emerald' collided with the anchored 'Arklow Breeze' while departing from Elbe Port Brunsbüttel and en route to Thyboroen. Both vessels, along with the quay, sustained minor damages as a result of the allision. Investigating authorities detected a strong odor of alcohol emanating from the Russian captain of the Latvian-flagged 'Rix Emerald.' A breathalyzer test indicated a blood alcohol level of 1.44 per thousand. Following this, the captain was taken to a local hospital in Brunsbüttel for a blood sample. The incident resulted in a fine of €3,000 for safety violations. The 'Rix Emerald' was subsequently detained and repositioned at Brunsbüttel anchorage pending further port state control inspections. Meanwhile, the 'Arklow Breeze' was cleared to depart the port on June 3 around noon, continuing its journey to Dunkirk.
