On the evening of January 5, 2016, a significant fire broke out in the engine room of the cargo vessel "Arnarfell" while it was en route from Vestmannaeyjar, located on Iceland's south coast, to Immingham, approximately 50 miles away from the British port. The incident occurred while the ship was navigating challenging seas, about 11 miles northeast of Scarborough. The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) deployed an all-weather lifeboat (ALB) which had been at sea on a training exercise for one hour before having to return to base for fresh crew. The lifeboat set out again around 6:30 p.m., taking about an hour to brave the high waves and poor visibility brought on by frequent rain. The lifeboat stood by for an hour and a half as the crew of the "Arnarfell" worked to extinguish the blaze, remaining on standby for any potential evacuation needs. By 9:13 p.m., the "Arnarfell" was reported to have achieved restricted maneuverability, continuing its southward journey despite the fire. Bravely, the crew managed to gain control of the situation, and the lifeboat made its return to station by 10 p.m. The cargo ship successfully arrived at Immingham port on January 6 at 4:50 a.m., operating under its own power.
