In a remarkable auction event, a stunning luxury vessel was sold for an impressive $5.5 million to a group of Russian buyers. This sale highlights the ongoing demand for high-end maritime assets in the market. The tanker Masalli faced a detention order in Aarhus on October 13, 2017, following a significant breach of maritime labor regulations, specifically under the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC). The International Transport Workers' Federation (ITF) discovered during an inspection that the crew had not been compensated for their labor for over five months, totaling nearly $134,000 in unpaid wages. ITF inspector Morten Bach boarded the vessel to assess the situation involving the crew of 16, comprised of nine Russian nationals, six Azerbaijani, and one Ukrainian. Payment issues had persisted since June, prompting concerns for the crew's welfare. Upon the tanker's arrival at Aarhus oil port for unloading operations, the Danish Maritime Authority was alerted to these concerning circumstances and prepared for a detention. The vessel, owned by the Turkish company Palmali, has established business ties with Russia and is crewed through a Russian crewing agency. ITF inspector Morten Bach was present at the dock when the Masalli, which had experienced a delayed arrival at 11:30 a.m. on October 12, anchored off the port the following day.
