On November 17, 2018, the Panama-flagged bulk carrier "Efi Theo" (IMO: 9145982) encountered a mishap while navigating the Escravos River in Nigeria, heading towards Wari Port with a cargo of wheat. The vessel collided with another ship, the "Arvika," which resulted in a significant breach on the starboard side. This accident led to water ingress into the cargo hold, ultimately causing the "Efi Theo" to run aground in the Bight of Benin, coordinates 05° 35.22' N 005° 22.82' E. In response to the incident, the vessel's owners secured a Lloyd's Open Form (LOF) salvage agreement with the Greek company, Five Ocean Salvage, which activated the SCOPIC Clause for timely and effective salvage operations. A dedicated team of 27 salvors boarded the damaged bulk carrier on December 5 and initiated efforts to fabricate and install a patch to secure cargo hold No. 3, making it watertight.
