Suction Forces Cause Ship to Drift in Brake Harbor Incident
On July 21, 2026, at around 6:30 a.m., the 'Hosei Venture' (IMO: 9550670) faced an unexpected situation while moored at the Brake pier. The vessel was set adrift due to suction forces created by the simultaneous passage of two other ships: the 'Arvika,' which was traveling upstream at a speed of 8.2 knots, and the 'Western Tokyo' (IMO: 9838498), making its way downstream at 8.5 knots. This incident resulted in the ship's gangway being torn loose, incurring significant damage that rendered it unusable and created access challenges for the crew. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, as no personnel were on the gangway during the occurrence. Following this event, the Brake Water Police initiated an inquiry and discovered that the 'Hosei Venture' had not been secured according to mooring regulations, with some lines not adequately tensioned, which permitted the vessel's movement. The downstream vessel adhered to proper speed limits and was cleared of responsibility. Although damage was confined to the ship itself, port authorities consulted on the matter led to administrative actions against the captain, in line with Lower Saxony Port Regulations, and a corresponding fine was issued. Furthermore, a report was submitted to the Federal Bureau of Maritime Casualty Investigation in Hamburg. Efi Theo Reemerges After Salvage Operations Post Collison in Escravos
On November 17, 2018, the Panama-flagged bulk carrier "Efi Theo" (IMO: 9145982) encountered a mishap while navigating the Escravos River in Nigeria, heading towards Wari Port with a cargo of wheat. The vessel collided with another ship, the "Arvika," which resulted in a significant breach on the starboard side. This accident led to water ingress into the cargo hold, ultimately causing the "Efi Theo" to run aground in the Bight of Benin, coordinates 05Β° 35.22' N 005Β° 22.82' E. In response to the incident, the vessel's owners secured a Lloyd's Open Form (LOF) salvage agreement with the Greek company, Five Ocean Salvage, which activated the SCOPIC Clause for timely and effective salvage operations. A dedicated team of 27 salvors boarded the damaged bulk carrier on December 5 and initiated efforts to fabricate and install a patch to secure cargo hold No. 3, making it watertight. Following this, plans to pump out the excess water from the hold were set in motion in anticipation of a refloating attempt. Meanwhile, the "Arvika" concluded its operations in Escravos, departing on December 2 and setting course for Singapore, where it is expected to arrive by December 31.
