Civil Guard Intercepts Major Cocaine Smuggling Operation Off Spain's Coast

Jul 18, 2025 11:52

In a significant law enforcement operation on the evening of June 16, 2025, the Civil Guard successfully intercepted a large cocaine smuggling attempt destined for Spain. The incident occurred aboard the container ship 'AS Carelia', which was making its way from Cartagena when it was located approximately 40 miles from the Bay of Cádiz, heading towards the ports of Vigo and Málaga. Following a tip-off, authorities escorted the vessel to Cádiz, where they seized a staggering 38 bales of cocaine weighing around 1,300 kilograms. The investigation revealed that stowaways had attempted to access the drug shipment, engaging in a dangerous confrontation on the high seas to transfer the bales to another ship. Fortunately, the Civil Guard was able to avert the smuggling operation. Once in the port, law enforcement initiated a comprehensive search of the 'AS Carelia', leading to the discovery of the narcotics on the upper deck, near the containers. Given the ship's considerable size, the inspection process extended into July, specifically on the 17th, as officers confirmed there were no additional drugs hidden aboard. As of July 18, the ship remained immobile while the investigation continued. Brave Rescue: Four Refugees Saved from Sunken Boat Off Indonesia

Aug 31, 2012 10:47

In a daring rescue operation on August 30, 2012, the cargo vessel 'AS Carelia', while on its route from Melbourne to Singapore, came to the aid of four survivors from a refugee boat that tragically sank off the coast of Indonesia. The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) concluded its search and rescue (SAR) mission west of Java on August 31, based on medical assessments indicating that the likelihood of finding additional survivors was minimal. In total, four merchant ships and the HMAS Maitland collaborated to rescue 55 individuals. Among the rescued, three sustained injuries and were promptly taken to Merak, Indonesia, for medical care. Sadly, one body was recovered during the SAR efforts. The HMAS Maitland was instrumental in saving 34 refugees, while the APL Bahrain rescued 15 and the Da Qing Xia managed to locate one. Other vessels participating in the operation included the Chemroute, Forever South West, Voyage Explorer, Frontier Coronet, World Swan, and Pelafigue Tide. These collective efforts highlight the ongoing challenges faced by refugees at sea and the dedication of maritime crews to save lives.
