AS Sara Aids 223 Migrants in Dramatic Rescue Near Crete

Jun 23, 2025 10:26

On June 20, 2025, the container ship 'AS Sara', on its voyage from Venice to Port Said, made a significant humanitarian impact by rescuing 223 migrants stranded on a fishing boat 50 nautical miles south of Kala Limeni, off the coast of Crete. The search and rescue effort began after the Greek Coastguard's SAR Coordination Center alerted local authorities about a distressed vessel carrying a total of 274 individuals, including 229 men and 45 minors. The situation unfolded when an unmanned aircraft, 'Heron2', located the overcrowded wooden fishing boat. In response, the Port Authorities of Agia Galini, Kala Limeni, Kokkinos Pyrgos, and Paleochora mobilized two patrol ships along with a FRONTEX vessel to the scene. Among the rescued group, 51 individuals were taken aboard the patrol boats for immediate assistance. Once the entire group was brought to safety at the anchorage of Kala Limeni, they were disembarked with the help of the launch 'Eleni'. Subsequently, the survivors were transported to a temporary accommodation facility in the port of Heraklion. In a preliminary investigation conducted by the Central Port Authority of Heraklion, three Egyptian nationals, aged 21, 34, and 46, were apprehended on charges of human trafficking. They are accused of violating several laws, including Article 83 of Law 3386/2005 concerning illegal entry, Article 25 of Law 5038/2023 related to facilitation, Article 45 of the Criminal Code regarding aid, and Article 306 of the Criminal Code pertaining to exposure. Survivors reported that they embarked on their perilous journey from Tobruk, Libya, on June 19, 2025, paying smuggling fees ranging between 170,000 and 200,000 Libyan dinars and $3,000 US dollars.
