Investigation Underway for Chinese Bulk Carrier Rosco Palm Following Double Grounding Incident
The Rosco Palm, a bulk carrier registered in Hong Kong, faced a double grounding incident while navigating the Columbia River in Washington state. The 751-foot vessel initially encountered difficulties near Skamokawa, where it ran aground in shallow waters. The US Coast Guard quickly responded to the situation, successfully refloating the ship with the assistance of a harbor tug. The vessel was then towed to a nearby location and dropped anchor. Unfortunately, despite anchoring, the dredging currents caused the ship to drift into another sandy shallow. Currently, the Rosco Palm is being detained for a thorough investigation into its seaworthiness, although reports confirm that there were no injuries among the crew, no significant damage to the vessel, and no leaks detected. Operated by the Chinese shipping company Rewood Ocean Shipping (ROSCO), an inquiry is set to determine the factors leading to these groundings.
No Pollution Detected After Hong Kong-Flagged Vessel Grounds in Columbia River
WARRENTON β The United States Coast Guard has confirmed that there has been no pollution resulting from the grounding of the Hong Kong-flagged cargo vessel, Rosco Palm, in the Columbia River near Skamokawa, Washington. The incident occurred on Friday evening at approximately 7:49 p.m., as the 751-foot motor vessel ran aground. After initially refloating, the ship moved upstream to reduce any risk of collision, subsequently grounding again while anchored on the sandy bottom, awaiting daylight for a thorough assessment. As of 7:40 a.m. Saturday morning, tide conditions allowed the vessel to refloat, with Coast Guard officials reporting no signs of pollution being discharged. Currently, the Rosco Palm is safely transiting to an anchorage, assisted by a pilot and tugboat support. An MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew has conducted overflights to monitor the situation, with a plan for further inspections as weather conditions improve. Lt. Cmdr. Karen Denny, the inspections division chief for Marine Safety Unit Portland, stated, "We are fully engaged with our port partners to ensure appropriate resources are deployed to minimize any potential impacts on natural resources and commerce." The Coast Guard will continue to oversee the situation, collaborating with response teams from both Washington and Oregon. While a Columbia River pilot is currently on board the Rosco Palm, towing services are assisting the vessel's transit upstream to assess the integrity of its hull and propulsion system. The inquiry into the cause of the grounding is ongoing, with a thorough investigation set to follow.
Bulk Carrier ROSCO PALM Grounds Twice on Columbia River Near Skamokawa
The United States Coast Guard reported that the bulk carrier ROSCO PALM experienced grounding incidents on the Columbia River near Skamokawa, Washington. The vessel ran aground at 19:49 local time on August 11 while navigating downstream from Kalama, Washington, to Chiba, Japan. After initially running aground, the ROSCO PALM was successfully refloated and moved several miles up the river, according to USCG reports, while her AIS tracking indicated a move downriver to an anchorage near Skamokawa. Unfortunately, while at anchor, she grounded again, resting on a sand bottom. The vessel was refloated again around 07:40 local time on August 12, thanks to high tide, and subsequently moved back up the river toward anchorage near Kalama for a potential damage assessment. Thankfully, no leaks or breaches were reported during this incident. As of 02:00 UTC on August 14, the ROSCO PALM remained anchored near Kalama, with a tugboat stationed alongside for assistance.
