MV Asterix Plays Key Role in Alleviating Manila Port Congestion

Sep 01, 2014 09:30

In a bid to alleviate the congestion affecting Manila’s busy ports, officials have initiated an extensive transfer of overstaying freight containers to the Subic Bay area. This strategic move comes ahead of the anticipated influx of new shipments for the bustling Christmas season. On Thursday morning, the chartered vessel MV Asterix departed from the Manila International Container Terminal (MICT), transporting 1,154 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) to Subic, as confirmed by the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA). Expected to return to Manila over the weekend, MV Asterix will continue its mission to clear space, as it prepares to carry the remaining portion of an estimated 3,000 TEUs initially scheduled for transfer by the PPA, in collaboration with the Bureau of Customs and port operators International Container Terminal Services Inc. and Asian Terminals Inc. Authorities anticipate that this number may rise in the coming days depending on ongoing demand. Local businessmen have pointed to the expanded daytime truck ban, enforced by the Manila city government since February, as a significant factor contributing to the ongoing congestion. This regulation has inhibited timely deliveries and hampered the overall flow of cargo operations from the port, increasing pressure on supply chains as the holiday season approaches.
