Groundbreaking Discovery: Over 1000 Barrels of Nuclear Waste Found in Atlantic Ocean
In a pioneering expedition, scientists aboard the research vessel 'Atlante' have uncovered over 1,000 barrels believed to contain nuclear waste on the ocean floor. This discovery marks the first of what could potentially be hundreds of thousands of such barrels scattered across the seabed of the Northeast Atlantic. The dedicated research team, part of the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), embarked on their mission from Brest on June 16, 2025, focusing their efforts in the Western European Basin of the Atlantic. Spanning four weeks, the team will investigate the barrels while assessing their potential impacts on the surrounding ecosystem. To assist in their mission, they are utilizing the autonomous diving robot Ulyx, which is equipped with both 3D imaging capabilities and sonar technology to detect submerged objects. Historically, numerous countries disposed of their nuclear waste through ocean dumping from the 1950s to the 1980s, a practice that was ultimately banned in 1993 due to environmental concerns. Current estimates suggest that approximately 200,000 barrels may still remain within the depths of the Northeast Atlantic, resting between 3,000 and 5,000 meters. However, details about the exact locations of these barrels, as well as their condition—whether solitary or clustered—remain largely unknown. Consequently, researchers are focusing their studies in regions where they believe a significant portion of this nuclear waste may reside. Their goal is to develop a comprehensive map of the barrel locations and gather critical samples from the water, seabed, and local marine life. Notably, while the barrels were designed to withstand the immense pressures of deep-sea conditions, they were not engineered to effectively contain radioactive materials over the long term.
Deployment of ROVs: Searching for the Missing Submersible Titan
On the afternoon of June 22, 2023, significant progress was made in the search for the missing submersible Titan, as two advanced remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) were dispatched to the area of interest. Notably, the submersible linked to the Canadian vessel Horizon Arctic has successfully descended to the ocean floor. Simultaneously, the Victor 6000 ROV, operated from the French research vessel Atalante, has been deployed to join the underwater search efforts. This collaboration involves a dedicated team working in shifts of four hours to expertly navigate and control the Victor 6000 from the command center aboard Horizon Arctic. Each shift includes two skilled pilots and a third team member, who may be from the Canadian Coast Guard or associated with the Titan's operating company. Equipped with powerful lights and high-definition cameras, the Victor 6000 provides real-time visuals of the ocean floor, capturing details over an area that spans approximately the size of a small tennis court. Additionally, the Victor 6000 is outfitted with two precision mechanical arms designed for delicate tasks, including cutting or removing debris, which is critical in locating the Titan and any structures nearby. The combined efforts of these ROVs represent a hopeful step forward in the ongoing search and rescue mission.
Medical Evacuation Operation for Injured Crew Member off Nouméa
On September 16, 2015, at 10:25 a.m., the Maritime Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC) in Nouméa responded to an urgent call from the Maritime Medical Coordination Center (MMCC) in Toulouse. A crew member aboard the research vessel "L'Atalante" had sustained severe injuries to his hand, including a partial amputation of his thumb. Following a thorough consultation, the decision for a medical evacuation was made promptly. The MRCC swiftly dispatched a Puma helicopter, equipped with the Army's health service personnel, from New Caledonia. At the time of the incident, "L'Atalante" was situated approximately 330 nautical miles south of Nouméa. To facilitate the rescue, the vessel maneuvered closer to the coast for the patient retrieval. On September 17 at 8:10 a.m., the helicopter took off from Tontouta and successfully reached the ship by 8:50 a.m. At around 9:00 a.m., the injured crew member was safely hoisted aboard the helicopter. Following the successful transfer, he was flown to Nouméa, where he was met by an ambulance at 9:55 a.m. and subsequently transported to CHT Gaston Bourret for immediate medical treatment.
