Vessel 'Athena' Faces Engine Failure and Drift in Gulf of Aden

The cargo ship 'Athena' encountered significant engine trouble while navigating the Gulf of Aden, approximately 60 nautical miles southwest of Aden, at the coordinates 11° 47.38' N, 044° 24.49' E. The incident occurred on November 30, 2022, around 06:30 a.m. UTC, causing the vessel to drift uncontrollably. In response to the situation, the crew promptly initiated repairs aboard the ship, which continued its drift towards the northwest until the engine was successfully restarted on December 3. A day later, on December 4, the 'Athena' managed to moor at Djibouti anchorage. As of December 14, the vessel has remained stationary at the coordinates 11° 39.03' N, 043° 08.24' E, ensuring the safety of its crew and cargo.

On April 23, 2015, a significant milestone was achieved at Dammam's new container terminal when the M/V NIARA, operated by Orient Express Line, became the first commercial vessel to dock. This impressive vessel, with a capacity of 2,000 TEUs, successfully handled 1,011 TEUs during its inaugural visit. Situated in Dammam City, located in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia, the first phase of the terminal boasts a remarkable water depth of 16 meters, the deepest in the surrounding area. The facility is equipped with six quay cranes capable of spanning 23 container rows across 700 meters of quay. Once fully operational, the new SGP terminal will extend to a quay length of 1,200 meters, featuring 12 cranes and an annual capacity designed to handle 1.8 million TEUs. Mr. Tan Chong Meng, the Group CEO of PSA International, emphasized, "The completion and operational launch of PSA’s inaugural container terminal in Dammam underscores our commitment to fostering growth in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia."
