Captain's Alcohol-Fueled Negligence Leads to Atlantic Grounding Incident in Sweden

Oct 18, 2018 09:53

On September 23, 2018, a serious maritime incident occurred off the coast of Sweden when the cargo ship 'Atlantic' grounded, with the captain solely responsible for the mishap. The Swedish Accident Investigation Authority (SAIA) reported that the captain, who fell asleep at the helm, had consumed alcohol prior to the accident, leaving him unfit for duty. Alarmingly, he was alone on the bridge when the grounding happened, and AIS data revealed that no navigational course corrections were attempted leading up to the incident. Following the grounding, both the captain and another officer on board were taken into custody by local law enforcement. SAIA's investigation highlighted a significant lack of navigation oversight, attributing the failure primarily to the captain's negligence and the absence of a lookout. Compounding these issues was the shutdown of the Bridge Navigational Watch Alarm System (BNWAS), which could have alerted the captain to his lapse in attention. Moreover, the investigation underscored concerns about the ship's limited crew size, which, along with the inadequate support from the company's International Safety Management (ISM) system, raised serious questions regarding operational safety. As a result, the Danish operators of the vessel, Venus Shipping, have been urged to reevaluate their safety protocols and auditing procedures to prevent future incidents.

Swedish Commission Releases Findings on Atlantic Grounding Incident

Aug 24, 2018 13:31

On August 21, 2018, the Swedish Accident Investigation Commission unveiled its detailed report on the grounding incident involving the vessel 'Atlantic,' which occurred south of Oskarshamn. The investigation revealed troubling facts: the captain had consumed alcohol prior to the incident, ultimately leading to his falling asleep at the helm. At the time of the grounding, the 'Atlantic' was on a voyage from Oskarshamn, loaded with pebbles and gravel destined for Visby; however, it veered off course and headed south instead. Alarmingly, the captain was alone on the bridge and unaware of the vessel's trajectory, largely due to the shut down of the alarm system intended for watchkeeping officers (BNWAS). This lapse meant there was no proper lookout maintained, a direct consequence of the limited crew on board. Following the incident, legal repercussions ensued, with the captain sentenced in November to four months in prison for operating the vessel under the influence and for gross negligence in maritime operations. The first mate also faced repercussions, receiving a two-month prison sentence. Atlantic Vessel Runs Aground in Rønne Port

Apr 19, 2018 09:37

On April 17, 2018, at 1:45 a.m., the cargo ship 'Atlantic' departed from Kaliningrad but encountered trouble later that evening at around 10 p.m. as it made its approach to the port of Rønne, located on the picturesque island of Bornholm. The vessel became grounded alongside the reeder quay, an incident likely triggered by the low water levels in the port basin at that time. Fortunately, the 'Atlantic' did not sustain any damage and successfully refloated using its own power. However, the Danish Maritime Authority responded by detaining the ship at Skærve Quay until it could be confirmed seaworthy. After ensuring compliance with safety regulations, the 'Atlantic' resumed its journey, departing port on May 2 at 8:45 p.m. and setting sail for St. Petersburg, with an estimated time of arrival scheduled for May 5 at 10 a.m.
