Incident Involves Three Ships in Béjaia Port

Dec 07, 2020 10:23

On the evening of December 5, 2020, a serious maritime incident unfolded at Béjaia port when the Liberian-flagged container vessel 'Vega Sigma' (IMO: 9330240) experienced an electrical failure while unmooring from berth 22. As a result, 'Vega Sigma' collided with the docked container m/v 'Atlantic North', which was engaged in cargo operations at berth 24. The force of the impact caused a 64-ton mobile crane, which was handling containers on 'Atlantic North', to topple over. The crane operator sustained injuries and was subsequently transported to Khellil Amarane hospital for treatment. Following the initial collision, 'Atlantic North' was set in motion and drifted along the quay, ultimately colliding with the stern of the bulk carrier 'OWL' (IMO: 9441386), which was in the process of unloading a cargo of sugar. Both vessels suffered significant hull damage; notably, 'Atlantic North' sustained a breach that necessitates repair work before it can depart from the port.
