Catastrophic Crane Collapse at Blohm & Voss Yard During Storm Xavier

Oct 07, 2017 13:42

On October 5, 2017, a catastrophic event unfolded at the renowned Blohm & Voss Yard in Hamburg when a crane was brought down by the ferocious winds of Storm Xavier. This 100-ton crane, standing 40 meters tall, was tragically struck by the British-flagged ro-ro ferry 'Atlantic Sea' (IMO: 9670597, GT: 100430) during its outfitting at the yard's quay. Despite being secured in a storm position prior to the tempest, the ferry broke free from its berth due to intense wind gusts. As the stern of 'Atlantic Sea' drifted away from the quay, it collided with the crane, resulting in its total destruction. The remnants of the crane currently await removal, highlighting the costly aftermath of this unfortunate incident.
