Working Conditions Aboard the Attu

On February 9, 2025, the cargo vessel 'Atu' was detained in the port of Aveiro due to a staggering 21 deficiencies noted during an inspection. Of these, six violations were categorized as serious enough to warrant the ship's detention. The critical issues identified included: 1) Inoperative Satellite EPIRB affecting radio communications, 2) Non-functional fire detection and alarm systems raising fire safety concerns, 3) Emergency lighting systems, batteries, and switches that were inoperative, 4) Outdated charts compromising navigational safety, 5) Lack of updated nautical publications, and 6) An ISM certificate that did not meet the requisite standards. After rectifying these deficiencies, the 'Atu' was released from detention on February 14, 2025, and set course for Szczecin, where it is scheduled to arrive by February 22, 2025.

On July 15, 2010, the vessel 'Nordic Diana' (IMO: 9116010), while navigating from Kotka, Finland, experienced a minor incident as it approached the lock at Newport. The ship, laden with a cargo of timber, made contact with the West jetty, resulting in slight damage. Fortunately, there were no reports of injuries or major disruption following the collision.
