The harrowing rescue operation following a boat capsizing incident near the Island of Amsterdam has reached its conclusion. On April 5, 2019, a tragic accident involving the fishing vessel "Austral" resulted in injuries to two sailors from La Réunion and the untimely death of a 52-year-old crew member. After several days of intense recovery efforts, the operation was officially concluded on April 11. Two sailors were successfully rescued and have since rejoined their vessel, which has commenced its return journey to La Réunion. The dedicated teams from the Martin-de-Viviès base were instrumental in responding to this incident, providing immediate care for the victims. The body of the deceased was transported aboard the ship, highlighting the somber nature of this rescue mission. The first sailor arrived at the Martin-de-Viviès base late on April 8, while the second member remained at the Entrecasteaux refuge under the care of three rescuers until he was able to return to the base in the early evening on April 10. By the morning of April 11, he received the go-ahead from the district chief and medical authorities to rejoin his fellow crew members aboard the "Austral." With the completion of onshore relief operations, the focus now shifts to ensuring the well-being of the crew during their voyage home. Operational services, including SAPMER, TAAF, and CROSS, have been in continuous communication with the "Austral" team and are prepared to support them until they reach their home port, with an estimated return mid-next week, contingent on weather conditions.
