Crew Member Injured During Lifeboat System Test on Avalon Sea
On August 20, 2021, a crew member aboard the 'Avalon Sea' sustained injuries while conducting a standard lifeboat system test for Exxon's Hebron platform, situated 190 nautical miles southeast of St. John's, Newfoundland. This operation involved a series of lifeboat winch load tests, part of the essential maintenance routines for the platform. During the testing procedure, the #3 lifeboat was lowered onto the deck of the offshore support vessel (OSV) in anticipation of the test. As the team began to lift the test weight using the lifeboat winch, they identified a twist in the rigging and halted the operation to ensure safety. In their efforts to untangle the rigging, the line unexpectedly came under tension due to the vessel's movement in relation to the platform. This resulted in the rigging striking the crew member in the face, leading to injuries that necessitated medical treatment. Following the incident, the injured crew member was promptly transferred to the platform for urgent care and subsequently airlifted to a medical facility onshore, where he received treatment before being released. In response to the incident, the operators of the platform mandated an immediate suspension of load testing operations involving the Avalon Sea. Meanwhile, ExxonMobil Canada has commenced an investigation, with oversight from the Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Petroleum Board (C-NLOPB).
