The Aya-1: Crew Feedback and Vessel Data

On July 27, 2025, the cargo vessel 'Aya 1', transporting a significant load of military armored vehicles, was intercepted in Astakos while making its way from Jebel Ali to Libya's Misurata port. The vessel's journey was interrupted by a Dutch frigate, part of the European Union's Operation IRINI, which is dedicated to enforcing the arms embargo in the region. This operation has a track record of stopping similar deliveries of military supplies bound for Libyan ports. Following the interception, control of the 'Aya 1' was handed over to the Italian navy frigate ITS 'Morosini', which escorted the vessel to Astakos for a thorough inspection. Contrary to the cargo manifest, which claimed the shipment contained only cosmetics, cigarettes, and electronic goods, inspections revealed the presence of over 350 armored vehicles alongside various military equipment. Originally intended for regions under the influence of General Khalifa Haftar in eastern Libya, the 'Aya 1' faced detention until diplomatic interventions from Greece's Ministry of Defence and Ministry of Foreign Affairs, along with Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis's personal involvement, cleared it to continue its journey. The vessel successfully reached Misurata on July 31, 2025. This incident raises significant concerns regarding ongoing violations of the arms embargo and highlights the complicated involvement of international forces in the Libyan conflict.
