Historic Return: Iranian Vessel Anchors at Antwerp Port After Sanctions Lifted
In a significant development for maritime trade, the Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines (IRISL) made a noteworthy entry into Antwerp port this week, marking the first visit of an Iranian ship since the lifting of economic sanctions. The commendable distinction of being the inaugural Iranian vessel to grace Antwerp's waters goes to the container ship Azargoun, which docked at the Antwerp Gateway terminal located in the Deurganck dock. A warm welcome was extended by a delegation comprising representatives from the Port Authority, the ship’s agent PWL, and the terminal operator, who visited the vessel to greet the ship’s master and crew. Prior to 2010, Antwerp stood as the primary European hub for Iranian cargo shipments. With the recent easing of sanctions, the Port Authority is eager to rekindle its economic ties with Iran. Given Iran's substantial and expanding shipment volumes, particularly in containers and petrochemical products, there lies immense potential for Antwerp—a port that is not only the second-largest container hub in Europe but also boasts the continent's most extensive integrated petrochemical cluster.
IRISL Reestablishes Container Liner Service to Northern Europe
The Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines (IRISL) is set to reignite its container liner service to Northern Europe, marking a significant return since its suspension in 2010 due to sanctions. The recommencement of the European Container Line (ECL) service was highlighted with the arrival of the vessel Azargoun in Hamburg on March 17, 2016. This service will utilize 2,500 TEU container ships, connecting key ports including Hamburg, Antwerp, Genoa, Istanbul, Port Said, and Bandar Abbas. The Azargoun, which measures 207 meters in length and 29.8 meters in width, was constructed for IRISL at the Aker MTW shipyard in Wismar back in 2003, showcasing the company’s commitment to rebuilding its global shipping routes.
