Grounding Incident of the M/V Evolution in Kiel Canal
On February 27, 2012, the cargo vessel M/V Evolution experienced a grounding incident while navigating the Kiel Canal, en route from Rotterdam to St. Petersburg. The vessel encountered difficulties at the Schacht/Audorf passing point after suffering a rudder malfunction that was preceded by an unexpected engine blackout, causing the ship to veer to port and run aground. The Evolution became lodged between the embankments with its foreship. In response to the situation, the tugs Holtenau and Falkenstein were dispatched from Kiel and commenced efforts to pull the vessel free at around 9 p.m., successfully liberating it around midnight. The M/V Evolution was then escorted to Kiel, where it docked at the Voith Quay at approximately 2:30 a.m. on February 28, where authorities conducted thorough inspections and initiated investigations by the local water police.
