Baltic Madonna Runs Aground Near North Falster

Apr 10, 2018 09:38

On the evening of April 9, 2018, the cargo vessel Baltic Madonna, which has a draft of 4.9 meters, ran aground in the Grønsund fairway off North Falster, close to Stubbekøbing at approximately 6:45 PM. The incident prompted the Danish Navy to respond with the vessel Aries from Vordingborg, which was manned by eight volunteer crew members tasked with assessing the situation and overseeing the vessel's condition. As a result of the grounding, the fairway became obstructed for larger ships. Fortunately, the Baltic Madonna was able to refloat at 12:40 AM the following morning without requiring external assistance, aided by the high tide. After successfully freeing itself, the vessel navigated around Vordingborg and dropped anchor at 3:30 AM for inspections conducted by authorities from the Sydsjællands and Lolland-Falster Police, as well as examinations of its hull. Initial checks indicated there were no signs of pollution stemming from the incident. Meanwhile, the search and rescue boat MHG 016 (MMSI: 219019034) was prepared and stood by during the event. The Baltic Madonna had embarked from Copenhagen at 11:00 AM prior to the grounding, destined for Nyborg carrying a load of containers and large steel rolls. After inspections were completed by midday, the vessel resumed its journey, escorted by the anti-pollution vessel Marie Miljø. The Baltic Madonna successfully entered the port of Nyborg at approximately 2:50 PM and departed again at 7:45 PM, setting a course for Kristiansand, with an estimated arrival time of April 12 at 7:00 AM.
