On the evening of October 19, 2023, the cargo ship Baltic Merchant (IMO 9138202) found itself in a precarious situation, prompting it to seek shelter at the port of Cuxhaven. The vessel was facing the impending risk of losing its deck cargo, which included rotor blades and a tower section manufactured by Nordex for wind farm projects. Baltic Merchant had set sail from Emden towards Sweden on October 18 at 4:25 p.m., but severe weather conditions caused the lashings securing the cargo to give way. As a precaution, the ship navigated to Cuxhaven, docking at the Helgoland Quay on October 20 at 8:30 p.m. Initially, plans were in place for a Wulf tugboat to approach the Baltic Merchant with new lashings while the ship remained anchored in Cuxhaven roads.
