On January 23, 2019, marine police officials in Brunsbüttel conducted a thorough inspection of the tanker 'Bartok' to ensure compliance with MARPOL regulations at the oil port. The inspection took place between 8 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. after the vessel had unloaded calcium nitrate solution in Hamburg and was set to pick up a new cargo at Brunsbüttel-Ostermoor. Following its departure from Hamburg, the tanker proceeded into the German Bight, where it washed its cargo tanks and inadvertently discharged washing water contaminated with a residual 177 liters of the cargo into the North Sea. After a detailed investigation, the Hamburg Public Prosecutor's Office decided to discontinue criminal proceedings and instead initiated an administrative offense procedure. Consequently, the vessel had to pay a security deposit of approximately 500 Euros. The 'Bartok' departed the oil port in Brunsbüttel on January 24, heading to Rotterdam after taking on its new cargo at 2:30 p.m.
