Enhanced Coastal Trade in South America with 4,800-TEU Container Ship

May 04, 2015 09:44

In a significant development for freight transportation, shippers in Brazil's northern Para state have gained new maritime options as the Bartolomeu Dias, a state-of-the-art 4,848 TEU container ship, made its inaugural call at the port of Vila do Conde. This vessel, part of the fleet operated by Alianca Navegacao e Logistica, reflects an ongoing effort to enhance connectivity along the East Coast of South America (ECSA). Launched on April 14 at the Tecon Rio Grande terminal in southern Brazil, the Bartolomeu Dias is not only noteworthy for its size but also honors the legacy of the Portuguese explorer who first uncovered Brazil in 1500. Standing 837 feet long, 122 feet wide, and with a draft of 41 feet, this massive ship is now the largest vessel servicing Brazil's cabotage and ECSA routes. Alianca previously expanded its fleet with four additional vessels of 3,800 TEU capacity between 2013 and 2014, which help connect 10 critical Brazilian ports, stretching from Manaus in the jungle to the southern port of Rio Grande. Looking ahead, a sister ship named Vincente Pinzon is anticipated to join the fleet by July or August this year. The Bartolomeu Dias was delivered earlier in 2023 from Shanghai Shipyard Co Ltd. in China, part of a $232 million investment in six vessels that will aim to bolster shipping efficiency and drive economic growth in the region.

Alianҫa, a subsidiary of Hamburg Süd, continues to enhance its cabotage operations with the recent addition of the new container ship, Bartolomeu Dias. The vessel was officially christened on April 14, 2015, during a customer event held at the TECON Terminal in Rio Grande, Brazil. Luciana Pereira Quartiero, the ship's sponsor, was accompanied by her husband, Jacques Maggi Quartiero, who serves as the vice president of Camil Alimentos S.A. Notable attendees at the event included Dr. Ottmar Gast, Chairman of the Executive Board of Hamburg Süd, and Julian Thomas, CEO for Region South America East Coast for both Hamburg Süd and Alianҫa. The Bartolomeu Dias boasts a remarkable container capacity of approximately 4,800 TEU, which includes 600 reefer slots, making it the largest vessel Alianҫa has deployed for Brazilian coastal service. This impressive ship is named after the renowned Portuguese navigator Bartolomeu Dias, who first discovered Brazil on April 22, 1500, while serving under Captain Pedro Alvares Cabral.
