BBC Lagos Sets Sail After Addressing Major Safety Violations

Aug 08, 2018 12:00

The cargo vessel BBC Lagos has successfully departed from the port of Helsingborg on August 7 at 8:50 p.m. following the resolution of a series of serious safety deficiencies identified during inspections. A total of 17 discrepancies were noted, with several categorized as critical, preventing the ship from leaving Skåne harbor until rectifications were made. Notably, inspections revealed significant safety flaws, prompting the Transport Agency to criticize the onboard safety culture. Alarm systems were discovered to be disabled, and various safety protocols had been tampered with. After promptly addressing these issues, the ship was allowed to resume its voyage. Meanwhile, the Russian captain has been taken into custody on charges of negligence and operating the vessel while under the influence, with a recorded blood alcohol level of 2.5 per thousand. The BBC Lagos is now en route to Las Palmas, with an estimated arrival on August 18.

Svitzer Hermod Successfully Refloats Grounded BBC Lagos in Helsingborg

Aug 05, 2018 11:58

On August 5, 2023, the salvage operation to refloat the grounded vessel 'BBC Lagos' commenced in the afternoon following the approval of the salvage plan put forth by the shipping company's insurance representatives. Favorable environmental conditions allowed for a safe retrieval without the risk of an oil spill, aided by the anticipated rise in water levels at the grounding location. To mitigate any potential pollution, anti-pollution measures were promptly deployed. The Danish tug 'Svitzer Hermod' (IMO: 9788124), dispatched from Helsingborg, played a crucial role in the operation, assisted by the Faroes Islands-flagged tug 'Sund' (IMO: 9793076), which departed from Malmö at 11:30 a.m. Additionally, the Coastguard vessels 'KBV 034' and 'KBV 432' were on-site to oversee the operation. At approximately 4:20 p.m., the refloating effort proved successful as the vessel was escorted into the southern port of Helsingborg by the convoy, guided by a pilot and the Coastguard vessel 'KBV 432.' However, following inspections carried out by the Transport Agency, it was revealed that the ship had several deficiencies and was subsequently detained. Repeat Incident: Captain Arrested for Drunken Navigation as 'BBC Lagos' Grounds Off Sweden

Aug 04, 2018 17:18

On the night of August 3, 2018, the cargo vessel 'BBC Lagos' found itself aground near Råå, south of Helsingborg, along the picturesque coast of Öresund in Sweden. Despite the swift response from Swedish authorities who made attempts to alert the ship, all efforts were in vain—no one on board responded to the calls. At approximately 11:00 PM, the Maritime and Air Rescue Center noticed the ship deviating off course and attempted to contact the vessel via radio, as did a pilot boat sent to assist. Unfortunately, their warnings went unheeded. At 11:30 PM, the 'BBC Lagos' ran aground at coordinates 56° 0.10' N 012° 43.03' E. Upon boarding the vessel, authorities discovered that the captain exhibited signs of extreme intoxication, registering a blood alcohol content of 2.5 per thousand. Consequently, the captain was arrested for operating a ship under the influence. Thankfully, there were no visible oil leaks from the ship, which was stranded approximately 500 meters from the shoreline. Although tugboats were dispatched to assist, any efforts to free the vessel would be delayed pending a thorough dive survey of the hull. The Coast Guard's surveillance vessel, 'KBV 314', was already in the vicinity and quickly arrived to assess the situation. A Coast Guard diver conducted an inspection of the hull during the early hours of August 4 and reported no internal or external damage. At the time of the incident, the 'BBC Lagos' was en route from Klaipeda to Las Palmas carrying a substantial cargo of 5,000 tonnes of wheat.
