In a decisive action, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) has imposed a six-month prohibition on the bulk carrier 'VBG Wuzhou' following serious violations related to crew wages. The ban was enacted after the vessel arrived at Newcastle's port on April 1, 2026, where AMSA officials conducted a thorough investigation. The inspection uncovered that the crew had been deprived of their salaries for an alarming seven months, accumulating unpaid wages nearing A$69,000 (approximately US$49,000). Furthermore, the AMSA report highlighted various concerning issues aboard the ship, including inadequate provisions and the failure to supply free drinking water. The 'VBG Wuzhou' was subsequently detained due to its unseaworthy condition and deemed substandard. After leaving Newcastle on April 7, bound for Singapore, the AMSA's six-month entry ban into Australian ports or waters was put into effect, and it will remain until October 4.
