Beaumont Rescues Crew from Capsized Drekan Groupe Yacht
On November 9, 2017, the cargo ship 'Beaumont' became a lifesaver, rescuing the two crew members of the overturned catamaran yacht 'Drekan Groupe' during the Transat Jacques Vabre race. The drama unfolded on November 8, when co-skipper Christopher Pratt reported to the race office that they capsized approximately 300 miles northeast of San Miguel in the Azores. The sailors, Eric Defert and Christopher Pratt, managed to secure themselves inside the vessel and activated their distress beacon while donning survival suits. Amidst challenging weather conditions with 25-knot northeastern winds and squalls reaching up to 35 knots, the 'Drekan Groupe' was sailing downwind when it suddenly capsized. Timing was crucial as the duo quickly retreated to the cockpit just before their yacht overturned completely. Once safe within the cockpit, Defert and Pratt activated their Cospas Sarsat emergency beacon, prompting a response from the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) in Punta Delgada. At 08:58 UTC, assistance was dispatched after receiving the distress call. Pratt utilized an Iridium emergency phone to inform race director Sylvie Viant that both skippers were unharmed. Considering the vessel’s location, 380 miles away from Terceira island and the limitations of helicopter range, the MRCC opted to reroute the nearest cargo ship, 'Beautriton,' which was around 30 miles from the capsized yacht. A Portuguese Navy patrol boat was also enlisted for support in the search operation. At 01:34 a.m. on November 9, the 'Beautriton' reported contact with the 'Drekan Groupe' and agreed with the crew to wait until daylight to undertake a rescue, prioritizing their safety. Finally, at 09:38 a.m., the cargo ship successfully launched a lifeboat and rescued the two sailors, bringing them to safety. As the 'Beautriton' continued its journey from Gijon to Georgetown, the MRCC advised Defert to deactivate the Sarsat beacon upon his departure from the capsized yacht, eliminating further location tracking of the wreckage. The prospects for retrieval are yet uncertain, as estimates will be necessary to determine the drift of the submerged catamaran.
