In a remarkable display of efficiency, the Indian Coast Guard executed a medical evacuation for a stricken Filipino crew member aboard the cargo vessel 'Beijing 2008', located approximately 190 nautical miles off the coast of Visakhapatnam during the early hours of September 17, 2017. The vessel was traveling from Haldia to Santos when the emergency arose. The Coast Guard Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) in Chennai received the distress signal and promptly relayed it to the Operations Centre at the Coast Guard District Headquarters 6 in Visakhapatnam. The situation was critical; 32-year-old Chief Officer Dela Cruz Whilvin De Guzman was in urgent need of medical intervention as his health was rapidly deteriorating. In response, the ICG vessel Rani Avantibai, which was on a routine patrol mission, was redirected to facilitate the evacuation. Initial medical assistance was provided on board before the crew member was subsequently transported to a private hospital in Visakhapatnam.
